The Celica was introduced in 1970. Initially, it was a sporting version of the Carina but it soon became a separate model and was sold from the beginning with three different four-cylinder engines: 1,407 cc/86 SAE at 6,000 rpm, 1,588 cc/100 or 115 SAE. The Celica was available in three models: the Standard ST, GT with a more powerful engine, and cheaper LT that had fewer accessories and a four-speed gearbox.
