GS stood for Grand Sport:
The car was a sporting version of the Skylark that was intended to compete with the "muscular" cars of Buick's competitor.
There were both coupes and convertibles sold as GS 350 and GS 455. The numbers indicated the cylinder capacity in cubic inches.
