Japanese manufacturer Mazda had been successfully building cars powered by rotary Wankel engines since the 110S Coupe of 1967. In 1970 it introduced two new, larger models, the 616 and RX2. Both cars shared the same range of bodies, with a choice of two or four door saloon or an attractive two door coupe body.
Although the 616 Wankel engines ranged from 1490cc to 1769cc the more powerful RX2 version came with a 2292cc engine capable of producing 130bhp and a top speed of 115mph.
