The K70 of 1970 was originally designed by NSU but since Volkswagen took the company over before its launch, it appeared as a VW. In mechanical terms this car owed more to NSU than Volkswagen, for instance it had front-wheel drive and a water-cooled engine. Production of the K70 was moved to a specially-built new factory at Salzgitter, fifty kilometres south-west of Wolfsburg. Volkswagen had done better to save their money for only 200,000 of these cars were sold.
