Mercedes added two unusual long wheelbase sports Coupes to its SL range in 1972, the 350SLC and 450SLC. Both cars shared the same extended SL wheelbase which featured four seat accommodation and a fixed coupe roof. Behind the front door on each side was a 1/4 window which was partially covered by a louvered panel for extra privacy. In 1977 a larger 5.0 litre 450SLC was also available, later models were logically renamed 500SLC
The 450SLC 5.0 V8 developed 240bhp and was a direct descendant of the successful rally SLC campaigned by Mercedes throughout the 70's. Apart from the larger engine the 450SLC 5.0 (and 500SLC) used lighter alloy panels and featured discreet front and rear spoilers. Production of the 500SLC finished in 1981.
