Triumph updated its Spitfire in 1967 when it announced the new Mk3 version. The Mk3 introduced some new styling and safety features as well as a more powerful 1296cc engine. The new engine developed 75bhp and had much better performance than earlier models. Front brakes were also improved but the curious handling characteristics remained unaltered!
The Mk3 could be instantly identified by its new "bone-in-the-mouth" front bumper / grille arrangement. This new ungainly feature came as a result of new US safety legislation. Interior trim was also changed and now featured an attractive wood instrument panel and better trim. Another improvement was the one piece convertible hood which did away with the old "build-it-yourself" separate frame and detachable cover found on early Spitfires.
Despite its strange new appearance the Spitfire Mk3 sold well until its replacement arrived in 1970.
