Introduced along side the all new Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, the T-Type shared the Shadow's self-leveling independent suspension and dual-circuit all-round disc brakes, a major leap forward from the old S3 it replaced. The bodywork was all new, of monocoque design with a much lower roof line and squarer shape than any previous Bentley. Some 2 door cars were made by Mulliner Park Ward, (which later provided the basic design for the Corniche) a handful of 2 door cars were built by James Young.
By now Bentleys were being outsold by Rolls-Royce, indeed the ratio was one Bentley for every 10 Rolls-Royce, so the T-Type is now becoming sought after because of its rarity. The T-Type received a face lift in 1974 which consisted of "flared wheel arches" to contain the now wider Radial tyros. Later cars also had 3 speed instead of 4 speed automatic transmission which gave a smoother change, there were many other changes introduced through out its production life. Replaced in 1977 by the T2, the T-Type is now more commonly refereed to as the T1.
