At the time of the BMC merger (consisting of Austin and the Nuffield organisation) Wolseley were putting the finishing touches to its new, mid range car, the Four/Forty-Four (4/44 for short!), which would shun the new BMC engine rationalisation ideas by using the old MG Y-Type engine.
The 4/44 consisted of an elegant, low slung four door saloon body (designed by ex-Jowet designer, Gerald Palmer) mated to the aforementioned Y-Type engine which produced 46bhp. The 4/44 came well equipped, as was expected of a new Wolseley, and produced a modest top speed of 73mph. The 4/44 sold well until its demise in 1956.
