Following the merger of Austin and Morris forming BMC in 1951 a new engine was suddenly made available for the underpowered Minor. This new engine was designed for the Austin A30, itself a Minor rival and was to be known as the A-series engine. This new overhead valve engine had four cylinders, 803cc and produced just enough power to improve the Minors performance.

The Minor Series II was well received at the time of its launch but was still considered to underpowered to do the chassis and suspension justice. From October 1954 a revised front grille appeared, paving the way for the Morris 1000 derivative which would feature a one piece windscreen. Another change was the adoption of a revised dashboard complete with a large centrally positioned speedometer. This detail change was particularly useful for the Minor as it was being made in LHD as well as RHD form, making it easier and cheaper to build.
