Standard launched a revised Vanguard "Phase II" in 1952 to replace its original design. The new model had revised styling which looked more congenital thanks to a "notchback" boot lid and cut-away rear wheel spats. Apart from having a revised gearchange and hydraulic clutch little else had changed on the Phase II and so the model continued to sell well at home and overseas.
Vanguard Phase II body-styles included two door and four door estate options in addition to the regular Four door saloon style. In addition to the normal Petrol powered models Standard also offered a Diesel engined version, this being the first official, British, Diesel powered passenger car.
The Vanguard Diesel engine measured 2092cc, top speed was a leisurely 65mph however the car could easily manage an impressive 50mpg. Despite its frugal running costs less than 2,000 cars were built between 1954-55, maybe because the car was misunderstood and to radical for Petrol loving, British motorists.
