Standard added a new mid-sized saloon model to its range in 1957, the Standard Ensign. The Ensign was essentially a smaller engined version of the Vanguard and shared a similar bodyshell with the larger model. The Ensign was powered by a 1670cc four cylinder engine which provided adequate performance.
Despite its lack of equipment the Ensign provided reliable and economical transport for 4/5 people. As with previous Vanguard models the Ensign proved to be popular with the RAF as a staff car for lower ranks. In total just under 19,000 examples were built before production ended in 1961.
