Launched in 1968 to replace the Phantom V, the Phantom VI was not only the last true Rolls-Royce "formal" limousine but the last of breed of car design that dated back to Edwardian times. Early 6230cc V8 and mechanical servo, drum brakes carried over from the previous model, mechanically the car was out of date to start with.
Coachwork now a standard Mulliner Park Ward design, similar to the design that clothed most of the Phantom V cars. Front wings were all of the twin headlamp design, rear lights are now larger. One or two "specials" were produced including a car built for Queen Elizabeth II to mark the Silver Jubilee. This famous car featured an even higher roof than normal along with a Perspex roof over the rear compartment for ceremonial occasions.
The standard car received the later Shadow engine in 1978 but remained virtually unchanged until production finished in 1992, amazingly even the last cars had all round drum brakes!
