Sunbeam Harrington Alpine

Harrington Ltd in Howe outside Brighton was a company which was making bodies for many different vehicle makers, mostly for coaches but also for cars like Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Bugatti before WW II. In the sixties sports cars were converted by Harrington Ltd like Sunbeam Alpine and Triumph TR4. Four different models of Sunbeam Alpines were converted. They were called Harrington Alpine, Harrington Le Mans, Harrington Alpine Series C and Harrington Alpine Series D. The Harrington converted models of Sunbeam Alpines were sold by Rootes dealerships. The company went out of business early 1966. There is no club for just Harringtons but owners are welcome to any Sunbeam Alpine club.

Sunbeam Harrington Alpine is a converted Alpine Series II and they were introduced in March 1961. Older cars of Sunbeam Alpine have been found converted too. These are mainly later conversions and used as donor cars for rusty Harrington Alpines. The roofs never rusted, they were made in glass fibre. It was also possible to bring a private owned Alpine to Harrington Ltd and have it converted. There were never any storage of this model, they were made by orders. The Harrington Alpine was offered three stages of tuning made by Hartwell Ltd in Southampton. At the end of its production it was made parallel with the Harrington Le Mans. The most famous Harrington Alpine (3000RW) is the one which won a class called the Index of Thermal Efficiency at Le Mans in 1961.
