Overview

Produced: 1953-1959
Types:

The 8 introduced in 1953 was a very basic car featuring sliding windows, rubber mat on the floor and no boot lid, access to the boot being via the fold down rear seat. Standard soon realized the car whilst inexpensive to buy was not going to be a big seller. They soon introduced a better equipped 'Family 8' but the model did not get an opening boot till 1956.

The later models sold well gaining a good reputation for solid economical reliable transport. In 1957 the revised 'Gold Star' version was introduced. A similar car but with 948cc version of the same engine and known as the '10 'was introduced in 1955 the early versions sharing the 'boot less' body shell of the 8. Both models were discontinued with the introduction of the Standard Triumph Herald. A commercial version of these cars continued to be sold till 1962.

In America the 8 and 10 variants were known as Triumph 8, 10 and variously the Triumph Bantam. The model was also popular in Australia and India.
