Mercedes launched a six cylinder version of its 180 model in 1954, the 220A. The 220A was replaced in 1956 by the 220S. Mercedes also added an economy model, the 219 and a luxury 220SE version to the range in 1956. All four 200 models shared the same basic four door bodyshell and 2195cc engine.

The 220A was the first model launched in the new range and replaced the earlier (1951-55) 220 model. The new 220 set new standards for six cylinder smoothness and passenger comfort. The model was replaced by the more powerful 220S in 1956.
