Mercedes launched another milestone model in 1963, however this time the new car was no super-sleek sportscar, it was the 600 limousine. Mercedes had not built a car as large as this since the pre-war "Grosser" models, quite simply the 600 was an automotive marvel. The Rolls-Royce Phantom V was probably its nearest rival, however this was no pedestrian parade car, the 600 was not only large, it was also very, very fast.
The 600 featured air-suspension, a mighty 6.3 litre V8 and power operation for almost everything, including the doors and boot-lid! The 600 came as either a "standard" (18ft long) saloon or as a nine seat Pullman limousine (20ft long). Some open-backed Landaulettes were also built for various governments around the world. Production of the 600 lasted until it was quietly deleted from the range in 1981.
