As an alternative to the rather plain saloon models Mercedes added a new coupe in 1968, the 250CE. Based on a shortened W114 saloon platform the new Coupe featured elegant styling and pillar-less glass side windows. Most UK cars were well equipped often with power steering, automatic transmission and electric windows.
The fuel injected 250CE continued to sell until 1978 and was joined by a more powerful 280CE model in 1972. The 280CE offered higher cruising speeds and could reach 125mph quite easily. Production of the 280CE continued until 1976.
