A Mk II Consul, Zephyr and Zodiac followed the success of the original Mk I range in 1956. As before, the Consul used a four cylinder engine and had a slightly shorter overall length (due to the shorter engine!). The Consul Mk II engine had now grown to 1703cc and offered an improvement in performance, however vacuum wipers and a three speed gearbox were still standard.
The body of the Mk II range was significantly larger than before. Styling had a transatlantic theme as before and had a striking resemblance to the American models of 1955. A facelifted version of the Mk II arrived in 1959 and due to its lower roof profile became known as the "Low-Line".
Production of the Consul Mk II ended in 1962 after approximately 372,000 examples had been built. Practical Classics August 2009 - Featuring Buyers Guide Ford Consul Capri & Classic available. Click here to view in our shop.
