Ford Popular 100E

Overview

Produced: 1959-1962, 126115 produced.
Types: Saloon, 2 doors, 4 seats

Following the success of the Consul/Zephyr range of 1950 Ford applied the same engineering and styling principles to its new 100E range launched in 1953. The two car range consisted of the two door Anglia and the four door Prefect, both versions being available in "standard" and Deluxe versions.

The 100E Prefect had a more up-market appearance than the lowly Anglia with chrome headlamp surrounds and a distinctive chrome grille. The door window surrounds were chrome finished and many Prefects carried two-tone paintwork. Standard equipment included the gutless 1172cc sidevalve engine, three speed gearbox and vacuum wipers. The Prefect sold well and was eventually replaced by an OHV, 107E Prefect in 1959.

In 1959 the 105E Anglia was introduced by Ford to replace the 100E Anglia. The 100E Prefect gained the new OHV engine and became the 107E Prefect. Unbelievably Ford had still been producing the archaic 103E Popular, which was really a very basic entry model and based on pre-war running gear. To replace the 103E and also to make the most of the 100E tooling, Ford introduced a "new" 100E Popular.

The Popular used the old three door100E Anglia shell and the tried and tested 1172cc sidevalve engine. As this was only to be a budget car the vacuum powered windscreen wipers and three speed gearbox were also retained. Externally the Popular had a mesh grille (like the last of the 100E Anglia's) and the rear lamps were now separate Lucas units. The 100E Popular was fairly basic yet still retained the solid 1950's build and design qualities. Production ended in 1962.
