Ford replaced the Anglia 105E in 1968 with an all new model, the Ford Escort. The Escort used a brand new unitary construction bodyshell and came with a choice of 1100 (1098cc) or 1300 (1298cc) four cylinder, overhead valve engines.
Disc brakes were only an option on the mk1 1.3 escort and only front/rear drums on the 1.1 model with no brake servo assistance. When the mk2 Escort was launched drums were still standard on the escort popular model (both 1.1 & 1.3), but discs were available as an optional extra. Mk2 models L, GL, Ghia all had disc front brakes.
The Escort came in "standard", deluxe and Super trim levels and body styles included an estate plus two and four door saloons. The Escort was an instant success and apart from selling well throughout the late sixties/early seventies as a family car also spawned some very exciting sport models.
