The successful Escort Twin Cam was replaced by a more powerful Escort in 1970, the RS1600. RS stood for "Rally Sport", a brand name invented by Ford and one that would adorn many Ford models for many more years, a badge that has become synonymous with "Fast Ford" products.
As on the Twin Cam, the RS1600 used a reinforced two door shell and featured wide arches, wheels and quarter bumpers. In place of the Lotus Twin Cam was a 16 valve Cosworth BDA unit measuring 1599cc. The RS1600 produced 120bhp and could reach a top speed of around 113mph. Production ended in 1974.
