TVR announced a new "family" of small sports coupes in 1967, the Vixen. The next Vixen, the S2, appeared in 1968 quickly followed by the S3 in 1970. In 1972 a further improved Vixen S4 made its debut and remained in production until the arrival of the later "M" range in 1972. All Vixens featured GRP bodies and most were powered by Ford Cortina GT engines.

The original S1 cars were available with MGB engines to start with, however once production stepped-up the Mk II Cortina GT engine and the superb all synchromesh Cortina gearbox was adopted as the chosen powerplant/transmission combination.
