Honda Civic Shuttle

Overview

Produced: 1984-1988
Types: Estate, 5 doors, 4 seats

Useful, upright, Civic based estate car. Almost what we now call a mini MPV.

Original 1984 to 1988 version (silver) was 13' 1" long and 5' 5" wide with an 85bhp 1,488cc engine, 5 speed gearbox and optional 4 speed auto. 1988 to 1991 version (blue) was bigger and much prettier. Now 13' 6" long and 5' 6" wide with 90bhp 1,396cc engine, 5 speed gearbox and optional 4 speed auto. Also a 4x4 version from 1985 to 1990, originally with the 90bhp 1.4, but with a 116bhp 1.6 from April 1998.  The FWD was selectable by a switch, on the dash. In the handbook Honda advised certain driving techniques when using FWD, and they also advised on its limitations - ie more fuel inefficient and also affected the steering when engaged.  The civic's engine was superb, it could rev easily to 6k, and probably pass the glass of water test; ride was small car - same today; the interior was only acceptable; finally reliability - its japanese!

The civic was a good car, but this shuttle design predates all the rest, large or small - so was particularly rare.

Looking at todays Honda Jazz seems to be the nearest equivalent.
