A new German saloon car was shown at Geneva in March 1949 for the first time. Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Borgward (1880-1963) built the Hansa 1500. This was the first truly new car to be built in Germany since the war. The American style body with the wings incorporated within the general lines resulted from Borgward having studied American publications while being held in a camp for war criminals. The car was a great success. When its production ceased in 1952, more than 22,000 had been sold. The Hansa 1500 was a modern car in both appearance and mechanically.
