During the late 60's / early 70's British Motor Holdings (formerly BMC) became British Leyland and so Austin cars lived under yet another parent company banner. During this unsettling period BL made some surprising model changes to their growing range, one such model appeared in 1972, the Austin/Morris 2200.
The new 2200 was basically a development of the 1800 cars featuring a six cylinder version of the new Maxi engine. The 2200's layout remained the same as the 1800 version, including hydralastic suspension and a transverse, front wheel drive engine.
Although the 1800/2200 models were beginning to date, the 2200 still offered good performance and remained in production until the "wedge" 18-22 cars arrived in 1975.
