Fiat announced its replacement model for the successful 124 range in 1974, the all-new 131 Mirafiori. The 131 Mirafiori came with a bewildering range of engines which included 1.3, 1.6 and 2.0 litre petrol units. European models could also be ordered with Diesel engines, although none were sold in the UK.
From 1978 Fiat offered more exciting "Twin-cam" engines in the Mirafiori which helped improve the cars lack lustre image. A choice of two or four door saloon bodies could be chosen or a roomy estate version. The 131 Mirafiori remained in production until replaced by the Regata in 1984.
Standard 131s were often badged as Mirafiori, after the production plant in which they were produced; they had 1.3 L and 1.6 L SOHC engines. Revisions were made in 1981, and all models were produced until production ceased in 1984.
From 1978 Fiat also produced an upgraded version called Supermirafiori. These featuresd DOHC engines. Diesel versions were made, plus the 131 Racing.
