In 1950 Triumph unveiled a new innovative sports model the TR-X which looked amazingly futuristic for the time! Unfortunately due to the complex design and production costs only 3 cars were ever completed before the model was dropped. The TR-X featured a sleek open body with pop-up headlamps (that would not be seen on a Triumph again until 1976 on the TR7!) and alloy double-skinned panels.
The TR-X used a tuned Standard Vanguard engine and a special Electro-hydraulic overdrive transmission (which must have seemed revolutionary in 1950!). Unfortunately the next Triumph sports car would not arrive until 1953, the more conventional TR2.
