Triumph added a new model to its range in 1962 the Triumph Vitesse. The Vitesse was a development of the successful four cylinder Herald range and shared the same chassis (albeit reinforced) and basic body construction. At the heart of the Vitesse was Triumphs new six cylinder engine which would be used in many later Triumph models, for the time being the Vitesse used a 1596cc (1600) version.

The Vitesse used the same rear and middle body panels as the Herald and could be ordered as a saloon or convertible. The Vitesse had twin headlamps which were set at a slant angle to distinguish it from the Herald and standard equipment included front disc brakes. Options included overdrive transmission and a sunroof for the saloon. In 1966 the Vitesse 1600 was superseded by the more powerful 2 litre version.
