Triumph Spitfire 4 (Mk I)

No doubt spurred on by the success of the BMC Sprite / Midget range Standard-Triumph unveiled its new budget sports car in 1962, the Triumph Spitfire 4. The Spitfire 4 used a Triumph Herald chassis and twin SU version of its engine for ease of production (and to keep the cost down!) and clothed it with a very attractive open roadster body styled by Michelotti.

Thanks to the separate chassis the Spitfire enjoyed the same type of tilt-forward front wings and bonnet assembly that the Herald first used. The Spitfire looked good, had an evocative name and was cheap to buy and run, its Achilles heel was unfortunately its exciting handling characteristics! When cornering hard the rear wheels could tuck-in underneath the car which was most alarming!

Thankfully the press and public soon took to the Spitfire and the model range enjoyed a long and successful career.  Practical Classics September 2009 - Featuring Buyers Guide Triumph Spitfire (1962-1980).  Click Here to view in our shop.
