In 1968 Triumph added a new high performance model to the already successful Triumph 2000 Saloon and Estate range, the fuel injected 2.5 PI (Petrol Injection) Saloon and Estate. The new model used the same bodyshell as the standard 2000 car, only sportier wheel trims and some minor trim details hinted at the extra power available from the 2.5 six cylinder engine.
The 2.5 PI used a slightly de-tuned version of the 2.5 litre TR5 engine, producing 132bhp as opposed to the 150bhp of the TR. Transmission options included overdrive or alternatively automatic gearboxes. The 2.5 PI Estate used the same shell as the 2000 Estate, both of which were built for Standard-Triumph by Carbodies and offered plush carpet in the rear loading area.
