Volkswagen Scirocco

Overview
Produced: 1974-1981, 504200 produced.
Types: Hatchback,3 doors,4 seats

This is an Italian design body in German technology. The first two generations produced by Karmann, the third by Volkswagen.

This first generation from -74 to -78 was called version a, and the second -78 till -82 version b. They were delivered with several engines, 1.1, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6 Litres. The top model was the GLI and next the GTI both with 1.6L engine fuel injection Bosch Kjetronic. 110Hp in Europe. The TS was a 1.5 90hp engine. In US they also delivered with a special EGR engine as GTI with a 1.6L and approx 90hp. They had in fact many options, such as automatic gears, tinted windows, two available different front spoilers, inside manoeuvred mirrors, air condition, some different inside designs, several seat variants, and several different wheels. Even optional engine heads.

Oettinger made very good engines for this car. The first 16 valve engine in the VW history was made by Oettinger and sold in the Scirocco in 75/76. 1.6L and 150Hp very conservative regarding data. The later VW 1.8 16 valve is a joke compared.

Due to excellent coachwork by Karmann this car is fantastic to drive in curvy roads. It outruns most cars on this point! The reason is very tight point welding and very good parts in the suspension.

Volkswagen even made a race model of this car in 78/79 where they used two engines, one1.6 160hp in front and one 110hp in the rear. VW were denied to use this in racing due to the two engines.

This car is absolutely something to look at if you enjoy road capability.
