In 1956, an entirely new make was created, the Wartburg. This was an improved version of the IFA and hence was powered by a three-cylinder two-stroke engine. It had a capacity of 900 cc and delivered 37 bhp to the front wheels. The car's top speed was 72 mph (115 kph). The Wartburg was available in various versions, even as a coupe or convertible. The 311 4-door saloon was a dream for the East Germans. In 1962 the car got a 991 cc engine and became the 312.
