When World War II broke out there were 12,000 people working for Vauxhall in Luton. In the first year after the war instead of cars the factory produced five million Jerry cans, a quarter of a million Bedford trucks, almost six thousand Churchill tanks and most of the parts for post-war jet fighters. The first cars rolled off the line again in 1946. These now almost all had monocoque bodies. These were sold as Vauxhall Ten, Twelve and Fourteen. The Fourteen had a 1,781 cc six-cylinder overhead valve engine. The Fourteen was still typically pre-war with stand-up headlights on stalks and it did though have independent front suspension.
