The second Maserati model to enter production was the 5000GT launched in 1959. The 5000GT used a four camshaft V8 of 4935cc (later cars had a revised 4941cc unit) which developed plenty of power and allowed the car to reach speeds of around 170mph. Early examples (pre-1961) had four Weber carburettors and a four speed gearbox, later cars had fuel injection and five speeds.
The 5000GT was not intended to be a mass produced model and so coachwork varied from car to car, most were bodied by little-known Italian coachbuilder Allemano. Production ended in 1964 after only 33 cars had been built.
