In 1978 Saab replaced its successful 99 range with the new 900 model. The 900 offered a longer wheelbase than the outgoing 99 range and featured modern, sleeker styling and still with front wheel drive. The standard 900 came with a choice of either two or four door saloon or three and five door hatch-back versions.
All 900 models featured a 2.0 litre four cylinder overhead camshaft engine and all-round disc brakes, power steering and the option of automatic transmission. As well as the "standard" model's a 900 Turbo version was also available. The 900 Turbo had excellent performance from the start, later versions gained 16 valve heads.
