Due perhaps to the unsettling period of the BMC merger in 1951, Riley chose to update its 1.5 RM saloon in two stages. The first stage came in 1952 which saw the introduction of the 1.5 litre RME. The RME now had revised rear suspension and axle, along with fully hydraulic brakes to replace the earlier hydro-mechanical set-up.
In 1953 the RME received new style front wings, which were more abbreviated than before and the running boards had now been deleted. The rear wings were also modified to incorporate "spats" which half covered the rear road wheels. The RME finally disappeared from the Riley range in 1955 after only 3,446 cars had been built.
