In 1968, following on from the success of the 1502/1602 range, BMW added a new model, the 2002. The 2002 looked visually similar to the smaller engined models, although it gained extra bright-work and ornamentation. As with the 1502 and 1602 the new car came with a choice of either a two-door saloon or three-door "Touring" hatch body. In addition a limited number of convertible 2002's were also built.
Powered by a 1990cc overhead cam engine the 2002 offered excellent performance and came with a choice of 4 speed, 5 speed or automatic transmission. The 2002 range remained in production until 1975.
