Despite its curious looks the Saab 96 has long been admired for its excellent performance and rally winning ability. Following on from the success of the original two-stroke models the 96 V4 made its debut in 1966, using the new Ford-Germany V4 engine.

The 1498cc V4 drove the front wheels and thanks to its 65bhp could take the car above 90mph. Other mechanical features included a column gear change and front disc brakes. The unique bodystyle was only available in two-door saloon format, although a near identical estate car derivative, the 95, was also available.
