In 1966 Saab of Sweden launched its all-new sports model, aimed directly at the American market, the new Sonett.

The Sonett featured a sleek (drag factor of 0.32Cd) two door coupe body which offered accommodation for two people.

At first the Sonett came with a twin-cylinder, 841cc, two-stroke Saab engine, as used in the Monte Carlo model. After only 250 two-stroke versions the Sonett received a new 1498cc V4 engine which offered more power and a top-speed of 100mph. From 1970 the Sonett was restyled and continued in this, Mk 3 form until 1974.
