Fiat Nuova 500/500d/500F/500L

Overview

Produced: 1957-1975, 3081036 produced.
Types: Cabriolet, 2 doors, 2+2 seats
In 1957 the Nuova 500 made its appearance which resembled the former 500 only in its dimensions.  A rear-,mounted twin-cylinder air-cooled engine had replaced the front-mounted water cooled four-cylinder engine of its forerunner.  Once again, the car was a hit with the Italians and was continuously improved, with doors that opened "the wrong way" being replaced by ones hinged at the front.  The engine grew steadily in size and power.  It started at 479 cc and 13 bhp and finally became 594 cc with 18 bhp.  The 500 was never really quick.  The final Topolino had achieved under 60 mph (95 kph) with difficulty but its successor with 18 bhp could only manage a little over 65 mph (105 kph).
