The Fiat 128 was launched in March 1969 to succeed the 1100 which it resembled.  The biggest difference was beneath the bonnet.  The 128 was the first Fiat with a transverse mounted engine with overhead camshaft and front-wheel drive.  The 128 was available in various forms and was a great success.  When production finally ceased in 1978, more than 3,000,000 had been sold.
