Throughout the mid-1950's and early 1960's BMC had produced a highly successful sportscar, the MGA. The MGA had been a major step forward for MG and had been an excellent BMC ambassador, winning orders from all over the world, replacing it would be a hard act to follow...
In 1962 the MGA replacement arrived, the MGB. The MGB ( or "B" as it is commonly referred to ) ushered in another new era for MG just as the MGA had done in 1955. The new car used an all new unit-construction bodyshell which incorporated the chassis and had modern Italian lines. The MGB's power plant was the trusty B-Series engine, now in twin-carb 1798cc form and was mated to a four speed gearbox ( available with an overdrive option, working on the 3rd and 4th gears ). Top speed was well over the magic 100mph figure and the cars handling lived up to most peoples expectations.
The MGB featured wind-up windows, a snug fitting, folding hood and options such as wire wheels and overdrive. The MGB continued to be developed over the next 20 years ( see separate entries ) in various guises and gaining many body, trim and mechanical modifications throughout its long, illustrious career.
