Fresh from its "divorce" from Fiat German manufacturer, NSU, launched its new minicar, the Prinz. The NSU Prinz was developed throughout its 1957-62 career, passing through mark 1,2 and 3 versions, all being progressively better!

The tiny NSU featured a saloon body with a very upright roof line and seating for four people. The noisy twin cylinder engine was located at the rear where it drove the back wheels via a "crash" gearbox (later versions thankfully gained synchromesh).

A contributor to Motorbase advises the following:

The engine was aircooled. The two front seats were fully reclinable.  It was so little and neat that you could drive in front ways or reverse in to park on the streets.  They were very reliable and being two stroke engine the mpg was great.

The 600 cc engine on this vehicle was an overhead cam two cylinder engine. The cam shaft was driven by a complicated system similar to that used on a steam engine. You could not get the timing wrong and there was no way that the drive could fail as it was solid rods.
