Felix Wankel was given the opportunity in 1964 to install his rotary motor, on which he had worked for decades, in an NSU.  This resulted in the Wankel Spider which was at first a rather unreliable milestone in automotive history.  The rotary Wankel engine produced 50 bhp at 5,000 rpm which easily took the car to a top speed in excess of 94 mph (150 kph).
