The 1956 and 1957 Thunderbirds were virtually identical to the launch model but the 1958 version, to the dismay of enthusiasts, retained nothing of the famous and much loved predecessors. The "Squarebird", as Americans quickly dubbed the new car, was a spacious four-seater with monocoque body. The new Squarebirds got new 5,436 or 5,766 cc engines of 233 or 304 bhp output. They had become luxury cars and were no longer sports cars. Most of them were sold with automatic transmission.
