In 1983 Alfa Romeo announced its new replacement for the Alfasud, the 33. Although the 33 still had compact dimensions it was slightly longer in both overall length and wheelbase, offering plenty of room for the family motorist looking for a sports saloon.
As in the Alfasud the 33 used a "Boxer" engine layout with a choice of either 1350cc or 1712cc. The saloon body had four doors with the added bonus of a Hatchback luggage compartment. The 33 remained in production until 1994.
