Just like its smaller sister the 240, Jaguars "new" 340 was really a cheaper version of the old Mk II which had been discontinued at the time of its launch in 1967. The 340 continued to use the same bodyshell and mechanical components as the out-going 3.4 Mk II and offered no real improvements over the older car.
As with the 240 the 340 used slimmer front and rear bumpers as well as plastic upholstery which actually looked like leather to the untrained eye. The 340 remained in production until the arrival of the all new XJ6 in 1968 and served its purpose of maintaining a showroom presence for compact, high performance Jaguar saloons.
