In 1968 Jaguar announced its long awaited new saloon model, the six cylinder XJ6. The XJ6 used the well proven XK engine in both 4.2 litre and (European taxation beating) 2.8 litre formats. The 4.2 was a refined unit offering excellent levels of power and quietness, although fuel consumption left a lot to be desired!. Unfortunately many considered the smaller 2.8 car to be under-powered and the model also suffered reliability problems.
The graceful new unitary body carried classic Jaguar lines and styling cues, all the result of the legendary Sir William Lyons famous design studio. The interior featured sumptuous appointments and standard mechanical equipment included power steering and a choice of overdrive or automatic gearboxes.
The original (series I) XJ6 was replaced by the Series II in 1973, today good Series I cars are becoming increasingly sought after.
