Before 1945 virtually every mainstream British manufacturer offered a 16hp model at the top of their mid-size range. Rover launched their 16hp model, the Sixteen, in 1936 in direct competition with rivals from Morris and Austin. The Sixteen used a over-bored version of the six cylinder engine used in the Rover Fourteen. This 2147cc unit offered reasonable power and performance and was coupled to a smooth gearbox.
As with the other Rover saloons the Sixteen came as either a "standard" Saloon or as a "Sports Saloon". Standard equipment included plenty of leather and wood inside plus an interior heater, real luxury!. Production continued after W.W.II until 1948.
