Rover finally broke away from its pre-war designs in 1949 with the launch of its new P4 75 model. The 75 was all new and featured a modern four door saloon body mounted on a substantial separate chassis powered by a smooth six cylinder engine of 2103cc. The engine used the contemporary overhead inlet, side exhaust valve layout and was coupled to a four speed gearbox with a column shift change (later cars had a floor shift).

The styling of the 75 was as controversial then as the current Rover 75 is now. Only for different reasons!. The original 75 was considered to be very modern and futuristic. From 1949-1952 the 75 had a front spot lamp mounted centrally in the grille. This unusual feature became known as the "Cyclops Eye" and these early cars are now a sought after model.
